Introduction to Idiot Proof Computing (IPC)

Idiot Proof Computing (IPC) is two distinct things: a concept and a company.

The Idiot Proof Computing concept is most easily summarized by our motto: BIG BUSINESS IT—small business simplicity. To read more about the IPC concepts, see Link to document Idiot Proof Computing - the concepts.

Idiot Proof Computing the company is a small IT services and consulting business based in the twin towns of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens on the lower north coast of New South Wales, Australia (about 2½ hours north of Sydney). Established in 2005, we are ramping up towards a full launch in early 2007. Please contact us for more information.
 

Part 1: Selection

The IPC documents start, logically enough, in pretty much the same way as a business or home user would start off computing—with selecting, installing and configuring an hardware and operating system platform.

If we were to choose a motto or catchphrase to attempt to capture the essence of this section, it would be "any building is only as robust as its foundation".

Part 2: Applications

Part 2 of the IPC documentation will:

  • provide a listing of recommended applications that have been tested and are considered reliable; and
  • provide configuration documentation and advice for a number of the more commonly-used significant applications.

Part 3: Training

Selection and configuration of computer equipment and software (both operating and application) are worthless to an organization if the people who use the computers are aware of the dangers of careless, unthinking or malicious actions.

Such actions are often unintentional; this however does not reduce the danger that they pose. The motto for this part of the documentation is therefore: "just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it!".

Part 4: Support

The final piece of the IPC puzzle is the provison of support services.

All computer users need some of these services (such as file/data backup), and while some of the services do require specialist knowledge, many can be provided by a competent user after a small amount of training.

We strongly recommend that the need for these services be determined on the basis of  a risk analysis by the user or company concerned.
